I am joining Tara Houska, First Nation Couchiching and Founder of the Giniw Collective, to ask that you take meaningful action to address the climate crisis, urge President Biden to stop Line 3 and any new fossil fuel projects, and take action to protect climate defenders from repression and abuse.

The Line 3 pipeline is incompatible with the administration's climate goals. Allowing the construction of this type of fossil fuel infrastructure perpetuates this country’s reliance on fossil fuels.

In July, as Line 3 was being built through the Mississippi headwaters, you said “It’s about understanding that it costs more to not respond to the climate crisis than it does to respond…The International Energy Agency tells us we don’t actually need any new investment in oil, coal or gas production.”

Please heed your own words and take action.

Indigenous water protectors opposing Line 3 have faced repression at the hands of public security forces including surveillance, harassment, intimidation, pretextual stops and arrests, criminalization, and even torture -- also known as  “pain compliance.” The repression of Indigenous water protectors in northern Minnesota is representative of the growing rights violations climate defenders face around the world. Those who speak up to demand climate justice are increasingly targeted with attacks and criminalization. Governments, including the U.S., are failing to protect them.

Ahead of COP26, we urge you to take action by protecting the rights of frontline communities and climate defenders. It is essential to center their leadership and expertise in finding solutions for the climate crisis. Will you join us and urge President Biden to stop Line 3 and any new fossil fuel projects?
