Petition to Stop Wanhua Petrochemical Plant from locating in St. James Parish

To the Planning Commission of St. James Parish:

With Mosaic Fertilizer, Nucor Steel, and Occidental Chemical, the 4th district has more than enough chemical plants, enough pollution, and enough cancer.

One of Wanhua's plants in China exploded in 2016, killing four people. This plant would produce methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) and emit known and suspected human carcinogens. St. James Parish should not allow a Chinese company to move in and endanger our lives while the profits flow out of the country.

Mosaic's mountainous, radioactive gypsum pile is already threatening the community with possible collapse. The Uncle Sam plant is notorious for emitting toxic pollution. It seems everyday something goes wrong at one of the plants in the 4th district, and residents fear for our safety. It is no accident that the 4th district, which is a majority black, is being targeted by industry.

We don't want greed to take over our district and our lives. We don't see a need for this plant, and there isn't a proven demand.

Enough is enough. In the 4th district--from Sunshine Bridge to Veterans Memorial Bridge--the parish government talks about economic development, but on the east bank of St. James Parish there isn't even a place to buy shoes. Residents in Convent have to leave St. James Parish to buy even the most basic of goods.

Wanhua is one of at least five major chemical plants planned for St. James Parish. They include Formosa Plastics, Yuhuang Chemical Inc. (YCI), South Louisiana Methanol/SABIC, and Syngas. We are opposed to all of them, as they will all further threaten the health of our residents and lower residential property values in the parish.

Please vote NO to Stop Wanhua from moving into Convent, LA, and NO to any more chemical plants being built in St. James Parish. We want business, but we want safe, clean business that will help the community.

Sincerely,

The residents of St. James Parish
