Say NO to government interference in your right to access information

Say NO to HB 234 today!

You may have noticed that fringe groups are demanding that libraries in public schools and your communities remove books that they find personally objectionable. National groups bent on dividing communities have created lists of books they want banned, and they are encouraging people in Montana to pressure library professionals and school officials.

HB 234 is a classic example of a solution in search of a problem. This bill claims to prevent public libraries and museums from the “Public display or dissemination of obscene material to minors,” but there are no reports of this happening anywhere in Montana. While some parents may find certain books or topics objectionable, professionals work hard to make sure that they have materials on hand that appeal to diverse interests while protecting people's First Amendment rights to access information.

Misrepresenting material as “obscene” could result in the removal of classic books or works of art depicting Greek athletes, for example. If passed, HB 234 will likely lead to frivolous and expensive lawsuits by people trying to force their personal preferences on public institutions.

We're asking you to urge the House Judiciary Committee to vote no on HB 234. HB 234 creates a vague, unconstitutional, and unnecessary standard for library and museum collections. We can trust these knowledgeable professionals to make the best choices for their communities.
