Oklahoma lawmakers are pushing forward bills that would harm the fiscal health of the state during economically uncertain times.

Relevant Issues

  • Several tax bills have been introduced this legislative session that would benefit the wealthy at the expense of everyday Oklahomans.
  • HB 1539, HB 1200, and SB 291 would reduce state revenue, risking the state's ability to fund services that protect and benefit everyday Oklahomans.
  • Any tax bill this session should prioritize the needs of low- and middle-income families with targeted relief. Broad income tax cuts and refunds benefit the wealthy at the expense of everyday Oklahomans.
  • Income tax dollars make up 1 in every 3 dollars of state revenue appropriated by state lawmakers. Once Oklahoma lawmakers cut income tax revenue, it is nearly impossible to bring it back.
  • Instead of permanent tax cuts, lawmakers should modernize targeted relief measures like the Sales Tax Relief Credit, the Child Tax Credit, and the state's Earned Income Tax Credit. Increasing the effectiveness of these existing credits would deliver meaningful tax relief to low- and middle-income residents who need it most.
  • And it would do so without destabilizing the state's financial future. That's because, unlike permanent tax cuts, tax credits can be adjusted as economic conditions change, ensuring Oklahoma remains financially stable.
  • The uncertainty in the federal budget and potential cuts to critical programs like Medicaid and SNAP requires responsible state financing to protect Oklahomans.

Oklahoma's tax laws already are tilted to benefit the wealthy. Let's ask our lawmakers to not make it worse.

Email your state Senator and state Representative today and ask them to prioritize the needs of everyday Oklahomans, not the 1%.
