Urge Congress to Reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act

Jewish Dems call on Congress to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act and continue the fight against domestic abuse and sexual violence. More than one in three women have experienced domestic abuse or sexual violence in their life. This terrifying reality makes the Violence Against Women Act just as critical as it was 26 years ago, when then-Senator Biden wrote and worked to pass it.

In February, the Senate reintroduced the Violence Against Women Reuathorization Act of 2022. It is crucial that it pass both chambers of Congress swiftly. Survivors depend on the critical protections and resources afforded by the act and are in need right now. While we are disappointed that the act does not close the deadly “boyfriend loophole” by stopping abusive dating partners from owning guns, we applaud Democrats for reaching a bipartisan compromise that will deliver this crucial assistance to countless women in need. This act will support and protect survivors of domestic abuse and sexual violence by:

  • Expanding and improving economic, legal, and medical services for survivors;
  • Investing in domestic abuse and sexual violence prevention efforts;
  • Protecting diverse populations of survivors including Indian women, women with disabilities, and the LGBTQ+ community; and
  • Strengthening the judicial response to cases of violence against women.

Now that negotiations have concluded, we call on the Senate to take action. Sign here to call on your member of Congress to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act to support survivors and fight domestic abuse and sexual violence.
