Taking Action to Defend Democracy

As we commemorate one year since the January 6th insurrection and the GOP attempt to overturn a lawful election, we must recommit ourselves to protecting our democracy. On that dark day, an organized mob orchestrated and incited by Donald Trump attacked our democracy and the Capitol in an effort to subvert the peaceful transfer of power and prevent the certification of the 2020 presidential election.

Republicans at all levels of government have made it clear that undermining the right to vote and strength of American democracy is their objective. Republicans at the state level have passed voter suppression laws that make it harder to vote and gerrymandered congressional maps to lock in an anti-majoritarian conservative congressional advantage. Republican attorneys general tried to overturn state-level vote counts across the country. And, just minutes after the horrendous attack on our Capitol, 147 Republican members of Congress voted to overturn the results of the 2020 election.

The Jewish Democratic Council of America (JDCA) is proud to support crucial legislation aimed at protecting our democracy and safeguarding the right to vote, including the Freedom to Vote Act, the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, and the Protecting our Democracy Act. Jewish Dems continue to work to hold anti-democratic members of Congress accountable, and we will continue to combat the Big Lie about the 2020 election used to justify voter suppression efforts led by Donald Trump and the GOP.

Join us today in our work to defend democracy, and sign a letter to your members of Congress urging them to commit to the fight to protect democracy by:

  1. Demand Congress pass the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, which together represent a sweeping election reform agenda that would prevent gerrymandering, restrict dark money in politics, and strike down voter suppression laws;

  2. Urge Congress to pass the Protecting Our Democracy Act, which would establish crucial checks on executive power and prevent the presidential abuse we saw during the Trump administration;

  3. Support DC statehood and call on the Senate to pass the Washington, D.C. Admission Act and grant Washington D.C and Puerto Rico the opportunity to become states, which would give political representation to more than 4 million Americans, a majority of whom are people of color;

  4. Support the continued work of the January 6 commission, which aims to uncover the truth of what happened during the insurrection and hold its organizers responsible; and

  5. Call on all elected officials of all political parties to reject and publicly denounce the Big Lie that the 2020 election was stolen.

Preserving Democracy is not easy. Benjamin Franklin said that the founding fathers gave us “a republic, if [we] can keep it.” Today the anti-democratic forces afoot in our country are hard at work undermining elections, making it harder to vote, and eroding our democratic institutions. Sign here to demand your elected officials take these five actions to safeguard democracy and protect everyone's right to vote.
