Tell our courts: Save mifepristone!

We should be able to trust our courts to respect science and follow the law.

After a Texas judge blocked the FDA's approval of mifepristone, one of two drugs used effectively in medication abortion, an appeals court decided that while the court cannot ban mifepristone, they can restrict access. The appeals court decided to reinstate medically unnecessary restrictions, adding additional barriers to getting quality reproductive care, which will disproportionately impact our most underserved and marginalized communities.

We are extremely disappointed that the court continues to put politics over people and this decision shows that judicial rulings are not necessarily rooted in law or based on facts.

This attack on medication abortion is not about a question of safety or medical risk; it is about extremist anti-abortion advocates continuing to attempt to limit access and restrict reproductive rights. They didn't stop with Roe v. Wade, and they won't stop with mifepristone.

The judiciary must hear us loud and clear: The unprecedented attack on mifepristone is a gross injustice that could harm millions of people.

The ruling in Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine v. FDA and the subsequent appeals court decision are unconscionable and inconsistent with the law.

Mifepristone — approved more than 20 years ago and used effectively by millions of people for medication abortion — is safe.

Anti-abortion extremists are attempting to weaponize the courts to ban abortion nationwide, even in states that have legal protections for abortion access.

Reproductive freedom should be a right, not a privilege. I am joining the United State of Women to demand respect for our bodily autonomy and the authority to choose the reproductive care that is right for us. We expect fair-minded judges to reverse this terrible decision and uphold the law.
