Eight airlines already have STOPPED allowing families and rescues to fly their dogs into the United States after the Centers for Disease Control issued and re-issued importation rules that the carriers find confusing and too onerous to follow.
Why? A massive overreaction to four rabies cases coming into the United States over six years among up to 7 million healthy dog entries.
The new rules took effect August 1, but despite CDC efforts to clarify and ease some rules, the airline bans remain—meaning hardship for families and returning military personnel and potential death sentences for dogs in the hands of foreign rescues needing homes in this country.
“We are seeing on the ground that CDC rules are a de facto ban on dog travel, which is leaving many Americans with an impossible choice to stay out of country or return home without their dog,” says Wayne Pacelle, president of Animal Wellness Action. “This is simply unacceptable, especially when there is zero justification to cause this kind of stress.”
