Demand Congress Act Before the July 25th Deadline to Prevent Massive Ongoing Unemployment!

When Congress passed the CARES Act, unemployed Wisconsinites received a critical lifeline of $600 per week to provide a vital local stimulus through the pockets of working families. And not just unemployed Wisconsinites, but thousands of working Wisconsinites participating in our state's Work-Share program helps get people back to work faster and prevent more layoffs(1). And we should know, Citizen Action leaders have helped many hundreds of workers and small businesses sign up for Work-Share.

But this $600 per week was delayed in getting to many workers - some still haven't received it - because of how many needed it, and it is set to expire at the end of July! Over 650,000 Wisconsinites have applied since March(2). Some are still waiting, and many aren't able to return to their jobs by then (or possibly at all)

We CANNOT suddenly cut hundreds of thousands of Wisconsinites off without a plan. Congress must allow this critical $600/week lifeline to continue or create a major jobs plan to create and/or subsidize jobs all over the nation, as we did during the Great Depression. Senator Tammy Baldwin has a plan to do just that, to create a national subsidized employment program, and we need to demand ideas like these are heard(3). And on top of that, Senator Baldwin and Congressman Pocan have introduced the Rebuilding Main Street Act to continue the $600/wek benefit for both unemployed workers and workers whose employers opt for a "work-share" plan to prevent layoffs!
