Urge Congress to Take Action on Student Loan Relief
Urge Congress to Take Action on Student Loan Relief

The US faces a growing student debt crisis. As of August 2022, students owe an astounding $1.75 trillion in debt and the price of college has risen by over 250 percent in the past thirty years. The cost of obtaining a college education forces millions of students to take out thousands of dollars in student loans, leaving them in insurmountable debt for decades. Additionally, the student debt crisis exacerbates systemic racism and disproportionately affects black and minority communities. This should not be the cost of education in America.

President Biden has taken historic action to tackle the student debt crisis. His administration has approved over $117 billion in relief for nearly 3.6 million student loan borrowers, and he most recently announced that 125,000 Americans have been approved for $9 billion in debt relief through his administration's efforts to fix Income-Driven Repayment Plans, public service loan forgiveness, and by canceling debt for borrowers with total and permanent disabilities. President Biden has done more to address the student loan crisis than any President in American history. JDCA thanks President Biden for taking action to combat the student debt crisis.

While we celebrate this meaningful action to provide student debt relief, it cannot be where the effort stops. No one should have to go into crushing debt simply to get a college education. Congress must pass legislation to make college debt-free and ensure that future generations do not have to take on crippling debt to get an education.
