Every year, thousands of chicks and ducklings are sold in Tractor Supply stores across the country. Buyers are looking for “cheap” sources of eggs, pets for their children, or cute props to celebrate spring. Tractor Supply will sell chicks to anyone who walks through the door, and they don't provide information about the realities of chicken care.
When you buy chicks, here's what Tractor Supply doesn't tell you:
-The chicks haven't received vet care at any point in their lives, and many are already sick
-It's likely that there is at a least one baby rooster in your group of chicks
-Vet care for chickens can be expensive, and they require specialized vet care
-Egg production changes with the seasons, and the chicks have been bred to lay eggs at a rate that causes health problems like cancer
It is very common for buyers often neglect chickens, failing to provide them with essential medical care or proper housing, so they end up sick or killed by predators. It is especially common for roosters and older hens to end up dumped in the woods or at already-crowded shelters. Rescues and sanctuaries have been bearing the brunt of this irresponsible purchasing for years-- the most common rescue call we get is for unwanted chickens and roosters from backyard flocks, and our ability to help is limited. Help us tell Tractor Supply to stop profiting from ignorance and passing the burden of care and education to rescues, sanctuaries, and shelters.
