Giving food or money to those in need (Matanot Le'evyonim) is one of the four core commandments of Purim. On a day in which we celebrate with indulgence and feasts, we support those who cannot easily access the food their families want or need. This Purim, consider donating to the West Side Campaign Against Hunger (WSCAH), one of BJ's partner organizations focused on alleviating the food insecurity experienced by so many of our neighbors on a daily basis.
BJ members will also be volunteering our time at WSCAH on Purim to help ensure that those facing hunger can access healthy and nutritious food for their families with dignity. Learn more and sign up to volunteer here.
WSCAH had anticipated that food insecurity rates would decline as our lives returned to a sense of normalcy, but this is unfortunately not the reality. Families are now facing heightened struggles, particularly in providing for their basic needs, leading to a significant increase in food insecurity across the City. From October through December 2023 across their network of 30 partner sites, WSCAH provided more than 43,000 distributions of healthy groceries. This is 30% more than the previous year and the greatest number in any one quarter in their 45-year history.
Please consider making a gift today so families can continue accessing the healthy groceries WSCAH provides.
