As your constituent and as someone who cares about public lands and the bedrock laws that ensure their protection, I am writing to urge you to oppose H.R. 521, the Ending Presidential Overreach on Public Lands Act, introduced by Representatives Mark Amodei of Nevada and Celeste Maloy of Utah. As well as oppose the Senate companion S.220 introduced by Senator Mike Lee of Utah.

Our national monuments and public lands and waters are a key part of our identity as Americans. They tell the story of our shared cultural, natural, and historic heritage. Since President Theodore Roosevelt signed the Antiquities Act into law, Presidents of both parties have used it to protect cherished places across our country.

National monuments preserve our water, wildlife and ways of life, and have protected places core to our national identity, such as the Grand Canyon and the Statue of Liberty. They also ensure we have clean and safe public lands and waters for all of us to enjoy.

Congress already has the authority to designate or revoke national monuments, making the intent of the Ending Presidential Overreach on Public Lands Act and its Senate companion crystal clear: to take away an essential conservation tool from the Executive Branch that presidents from both parties have used for more than a century when Congress has failed to act with due speed. It’s the kind of checks and balances our constitution is founded on.

And that’s why I am deeply disappointed that Representatives Amodei and Maloy and Senator Lee introduced legislation to eliminate the Antiquities Act and the power of Presidents of the United States to designate national monuments to protect our natural and cultural heritage.

I urge you to remember how valued public lands are to the American public and oppose these harmful pieces of legislation.
