Adopt a River Access volunteer program - MountainTrue

For Broad Riverkeeper, Broad River Basin

The Broad and First Broad Paddle Trails are adding access sites at an amazing rate. Some of these are owned by private landowners, some are on DOT right of way and managed by NC Wildlife Resources Commission. The City of Shelby owns one, and Cleveland County Water owns 2 with another on the way soon. One of the challenges of keeping a paddling access site open to the public and in good/safe condition is the litter that is inevitably left to deface a lovely spot beside the water. We are putting together small teams of volunteers to adopt a river access site. These volunteers will go out a minimum of once a month (year-round) to pick up trash. They may also sweep off steps or concrete walkways, and possibly perform other light maintenance work as needed. We will ask for pictures of the cleanups to share with social media. (MountainTrue staff will not be present at these clean-ups).

The teams can schedule the maintenance with their other team members at their convenience. We will assign a team leader to rally efforts when needed. The Broad Riverkeeper may join cleanups when available but volunteer teams should be comfortable working independently. Under no circumstance should a member risk harm to themselves or others in order to complete a task that seems dangerous.

What volunteers can expect:

  • walking  through the parking lots and along riverbanks at access points to pick up accessible trash
  • sweeping off the steps at the NC Wildlife access points
  • if there is mud deposited on the steps, contact David Caldwell for assistance 704-300-5069
  • where to dispose of trash & recycling: your local recycling convenience center
  • volunteers will be expected to visit their site(s) and clean them up 1-2 times per month year-round

Please use the Additional Information section below to indicate any sites that you are interested in maintaining.
