Sign the Petition! Invest in Soil Health

Right now, there are nearly $12 million dollars on the line for investment in soil health at the MN State legislature. $12 million to help farmers buy seed and equipment to implement cover crops, perennial cropping, switching to no till, prescribed grazing and more. Join us in demonstrating the demand for soil health cost-share dollars in Minnesota by indicating that you, as a farmer or landowner in Minnesota, are interested in accessing these funds when they are available!

In the 2021 Minnesota legislative session, Land Stewardship Project farmer-members wrote and championed a comprehensive soil health bill that led to the establishment of a Soil Health Cost-Share Program with $1.3 million within the Board of Water and Soil Resources (BWSR). The program will provide payments to farmers for implementing soil-healthy practices such as cover cropping, perennial cropping, and managed rotational grazing. We also won an additional $4 million for farmers to implement cover crops on the land. This session there is even more at stake: the House has proposed $12 million in soil health investments, while the Senate has only proposed $50,000. We need to show the demand is great!

With approximately 23 million acres of farmland and pastureland in Minnesota and our farmers facing extreme weather, financial stress, and degrading topsoil, we need to demonstrate to the legislature that we need significant investment in the countryside.

Add your name below and help show the demand for soil health investment and we will let you know when these funds are available!

Join the Soil Builders Network here. The Soil Builders Network is a group of farmers interested in building soil using practices such as no-till, cover crops and well-managed grazing to improve water infiltration, reduce reliance on inputs and revive their soils. By signing up, you will receive free timely updates on soil health workshops, field days, and be able to read, listen and watch media featuring local farmers sharing their experiences as they learn to incorporate these practices on their farms.
