Support Advancing Racial Equity in Howard County

BECAUSE even in Howard County, your zip code, skin color, income and other demographic factors can determine your health in unfair ways;

BECAUSE, from the nation's founding to today, our society has been designed to benefit some more than others. While a number of past injustices have been addressed by public policy, their legacies persist, and new injustices have emerged;

BECAUSE, we acknowledge that health is negatively affected by racism built into all aspects of life including the conditions in which people are born, raised and live, as well as economic stability, housing, education, transportation and daily experiences with discrimination. Systemic racism is a key driver of negative health outcomes for people of color;

BECAUSE, the Howard County Equity Collaborative, led by the African American Community Roundtable, the Association of Community Services, the Chinese School of Howard County, Equity4HC and the Horizon Foundation, came together to eliminate racism in our laws, policies, systems, and practices;

BECAUSE, by striving to close racial health disparities and create a culture of good health, Howard County can be a model community for health and wellness in the state and in the nation.

BY SIGNING MY NAME BELOW, I support taking immediate action in Howard County to improve laws and practices in the key areas below. I pledge to work with the Howard County Equity Collaborative to drive needed change, and further support collecting data by race/ethnicity, analyzing root causes and addressing racism in other systems over the long term:

  • Health – Increase access to healthier, higher quality, affordable food, drinks, and health care; and create safer spaces to walk/bike/play.
  • Education – Implement a culturally relevant academic curriculum; hire, retain and promote teachers that reflect the racial/ethnic makeup of the student population; and eliminate racial bias in the student discipline process.
  • Housing – Increase access to affordable and stable housing; and increase home ownership particularly for people of color.
