As patients, hospital employees, and residents of the greater Scranton area, we are united in our commitment to save Regional Hospital.
The collapse of the proposed sale of Regional Hospital to WoodBridge Healthcare left many in our community worrying about what will happen to the hospital, but we must press forward and secure a future for this essential institution.
Regional Hospital delivers 70% of the babies in Lackawanna County and cares for 36,000 patients in the emergency department each year. In addition, Regional is the only hospital in the county with a level 3 Neo-Natal Intensive Care Unit, caring for our most vulnerable newborns, and a geriatric Behavioral Health Unit, caring for our elderly who need in-patient care.
The other local hospitals, which already have emergency department wait times above the national average, simply do not have the capacity to take on all of Regional's patients. The closure of Regional would mean a severe reduction in access to care and a dangerous increase in travel time for patients seeking critical and in some cases life-saving care.
Regional Hospital also employs more than 1,000 people, contributing nearly $150 million a year in local wages and family benefits. The loss of these jobs would be devastating to the families of Regional employees and to our local economy. Other local hospitals cannot absorb the number of workers who would be displaced.
We must save Regional Hospital for this and future generations of Scranton area families.
We have been encouraged by the outpouring of concern and support from across the community and from elected officials at every level of government.
Now, we're calling on those elected officials and hospital leaders to secure a future for Regional Hospital that preserves access to quality, affordable healthcare and protects good jobs in our community.
