2SLGBTQ+ Oklahomans are under attack in the Oklahoma Senate

We're familiar with the intricacies of policies or political decisions. We know that issues often escalate during an election year. And we're writing you because the floor substitutes filed late Monday put the lives of kids at stake. Even hearing these bills does measurable harm to the mental health of 2SLGBTQ+ kids. Just last month the CDC published new data that in the first half of 2020, 1 in every 4 2SLGBTQ+ teens acted on suicidality. We're being literal when we say the lives of some of the most vulnerable members of our communities are in your hands. These bills did not move as originally introduced, and some of your colleagues are subverting legislative transparency and constituent accountability in order to advance these attacks at the last minute. We need you to use your power to stop these dangerous bills.

3 of the proposed floor substitutes threaten to ban best practice medical care, chill speech, criminalize medical professionals, and endanger children. If allowed to be shucked, HB 1074, HB 1076, and HB 4387 will do immense harm. Please, end these attacks here. Protect your most vulnerable constituents. We need you to take action.

The language being shucked into HB 1076 would ban best practice medical care for vulnerable kids. Not only do we risk the health and safety of young people, but we also risk the ability to recruit and retain medical professionals who, if this language advanced, would have to grapple with whether to not give kids the care they need or violate the law.

HB 1074 and HB 4387 are censorship bills pulling language from Don't Say Gay efforts in Florida and other states.  They limit providing kids with a diverse representation of people who are their classmates and community members. Silencing conversations about gender diversity and sexuality will not stop kids from being 2SLGBTQ+, but it does cause substantial emotional harm and exacerbates suicidality and bullying. By simultaneously creating obstacles for kids to handle the emotional stress of that scenario, these policies would ensure that Oklahoma continues to experience disproportionately high rates of death by suicide among our youngest residents.

There's a reason none of this language was advanced in the long, legislative process to this point. Shucking these bills only causes harm. Please, stop these efforts. Before it's too late.
