Volunteer Interest Form

ACLU of North Carolina launched its standalone Organizing Department in May 2024 and is building out a statewide distributed structure. We need YOU to help spread this work across the state. We have a place for everyone in the strucutre. If there's something you're interested in doing, we wil provide any training and resources to support you along the way.

We organize using what Marshall Ganz calls the Snowflake Model. This model allows for our staff to make the best use of our resources to invest in, and work closely with, leaders like you in county hubs. Each of those hubs have leaders within them with different roles.

Structure

  • As we fill volunteer roles, each county will operate as a County Hub (ex. Cabarrus County Hub). This includes:
    • Hub Captains (ex. Cabarrus County Hub Captains) will work together to manage the operations of their Hub, including calling meetings, writing agendas, and checking in with Team Leads. We recommend 2-3 Hub Captains per County Hub. Hub Captains work closely with ACLU of NC Organizing staff to maintain communication and to provide support, training, and resources where needed.
    • Within the County Hub, we will also have Issue and Tactic Teams, with Issue Leads and Tactic Leads
      • Issue Leads pay attention to updates and opportunities around their issue at the county, regional, and state levels and bring them back to their Hub for potential actions and information-sharing. Issues include: reproductive freedom, criminal legal reform, LGBTQIA+ equality, immigrant rights, voting rights/democracy, and free speech. These are broad issues and there is overlap between them, and Issue Leads will work with other Issue Leads and Hub Captains.
      • Tactic Leads work as needed to implement specific tactics. Tactics include, but are not limited to: city/county meetings and reports (ex, city council, county commission, school boards, election boards), canvassing, phone banking, tabling, letters to the editor, event event planning (social events, film screenings, etc.), partnerships, Know Your Rights, workshops, etc. Tactic Leads will have training and resources to train and support their hub members.
        • Organizing staff may recruit the Hub to participate in certain tactics, even if the Hub does not have a Tactic Leads, but Leads can help make it more efficient.
  • Statewide Teams
    • Statewide Hospitality Teams serve an incredibly important role in the distributed model. They do introductory one-on-ones with folks interested in volunteering with ACLU of North Carolinas and then connect them to their County Hubs and roles within them. One-on-ones are one of the most critical pieces of an organizing program, and they take a lot of capacity. These Team members will also check in with Hub Captains and members to make sure they have all the support and resources they need. This team can have an unlimited number of, very needed, volunteers and will a consistent way to engage in the organizing work. You will be trained and supported throughout.
    • Statewide NCGA Mobilization Teams direct other volunteers at the NCGA when the ACLU of NC hosts or participates in an advocacy day, packs the gallery for a vote, or is part of a rally in the Capitol. These will usually take place in odd-numbered Long Session years and requires members to be available in-person in Raleigh, sometimes with little notice. You may also provide NCGA-related education and actions to county hubs and help identify spokespeople for NCGA needs.
