Just after midnight on Saturday, July 27 2024, Linda Wooldridge was struck and killed by a drunk driver while she was biking on Lone Tree Way in Antioch. Linda was a mother of 2, and the 11th person killed on this corridor since it was increased from 4 to 6 lanes in 2018.
On April 19th, 2025, 32 year old single father Da'Jon Kee was struck and killed by a driver, while he was biking to work on Lone Tree Way near the intersection of James Donlon Boulevard. Da'Jon suffered a traumatic brain injury as a result of the collision, and died in the hospital on May 1st, 2025.
Before 2018, Lone Tree Way had 2 car travel lanes in each direction, with a painted shoulder on each side that was used commonly by bike riders. Antioch proposed a conversion of the shoulder to another travel lane. Bike East Bay staff and other community members spoke up loudly and clearly to staff and city council with warnings of increased dangers resulting from the new configuration. Our warnings were ignored and the additional travel lanes were installed before the end of the year. Since then, 13 people have been killed and 21 people have been seriously injured in crashes on Lone Tree Way, many of them related to speeding. These were all preventable tragedies.
