Children's Crisis Stabilization and Rehab Facility

Help us make a difference by contacting your legislator today!

As outlined in an article (Child Baker Acts on the rise: Are we listening?[i]) published by the Hernando Sun on February 19, 2019, Hernando County does not have a Crisis Stabilization and Rehab Facility (CSR) that is required to provide emergency mental health service for children who are detained under the Baker Act and Substance Abuse Act.

Children who require emergency mental health services in Hernando County are transported to the closest facility which has an open bed with the closest in Ocala and have been transported to over one hundred miles outside the county.

I support NAMI Hernando's position in favor of our community developing and maintaining a CSR facility and adequate support staff for the following reasons:

  • As disclosed in the Hernando Sun article, Hernando County has the largest Juvenile Delinquency caseload in the Fifth Judicial Circuit demonstrating a clear need for locally available emergency mental health service to our community.
  • Dramatically reduce the duration of time required for a child to be physically and traumatically detained for transportation during a period of crisis.
  • Reduce/eliminate the cost and time spent on transporting pediatric Baker Acted individuals outside the county by Hernando County Sheriff's Department.
  • Eliminate the excessive burden on the family and community support volunteers to retain contact and support of the child during their in-patient stay outside the county.
  • Reduce the requirement for our single facility (Spring Brook Hospital) as the sole source for evaluating pediatric patients that can not be housed at the facility.
  • Incentivize pediatric psychiatric providers to provide services within Hernando County.
  • Reduce/eliminate the burden on nearby counties to offer mental health services which are not being offered in Hernando County.
Please consider helping us alert our leglisators to support the need in our community to keep our children in Hernando as we work together to guide them to becoming future productive members of our community. Please take a minute to complete the petition and we will contact your leglislator on you behalf.
