Untax the Sun -- Solar For ALL of Alabama

Alabama Power places an unfair tax on customers that use solar power.

We believe solar power should be available to ALL of Alabama - free from unfair taxation!

Watch the video below as Energy Alabama's Daniel Tait explains that latest developments in this long and difficult fight.

Alabama Power charges a special tax on solar, up to 50% of your profits! It's one of the highest in the country at $5.41 per kW (per month!) of solar you install on your property.

This solar tax is the most egregious charge on solar by a regulated utility in the country. It holds back our state's solar progress by discouraging solar investments and discriminating against people who simply want to save money and control their energy costs. Don't buy Alabama Power's attempt to justify this charge as a reasonable cost to serve solar customers – it infringes on your right to be fairly charged based on the cost to provide them power.

The fight on this front has been long and difficult. In response to activists' complaints filed with the Alabama Public Service Commission in late April 2018 challenging the solar tax, Alabama Power increased this punitive fee  creating an even more hostile environment for clean energy in Alabama.

The bottom line is this. Alabama Power refuses to do what they should. The PSC refuses to stand up for the public they've promised to represent. But, that doesn't mean we stop fighting. This tax is not just unjust and discriminatory. It's illegal. We will continue to fight it as long as necessary. That's why we are supporting GASP, the Southern Environmental Law Center (SELC), and local solar owners who have asked the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to throw out these egregious taxes.

Increasing access to solar power helps Alabama families stabilize their energy costs and invest in renewable energy that makes our communities healthier. It is time to put Alabama's people before Alabama Power's profits.
