Because the Fair Food Program leverages the industry-defining power of corporate buyers, smaller food retailers have often been left out of the equation, yet we know that many of our strongest supporters are also members of their local co-ops or regulars at their local independent, ethically-minded grocers and restaurants. The FFP Sponsor Program creates a new entrypoint for smaller retailers who may not command the same market power as Participating Buyers, but aspire to ethical practices and a committed shopper base. For each of those retailers, becoming a sponsor would empower them to support the FFP by committing to make good faith efforts to source FFP produce, financially supporting a pay bonus for FFP farmworkers and the FFP's gold standard monitoring and enforcement, and engaging in education and outreach with their members/shoppers/customers about farmworkers' human rights and the Fair Food Program. Learn more about the Fair Food Sponsor Program here.
So far Park Slope Food Coop, Takoma Park Silver Spring Co-op, Each Peach Market, Three Rivers Market, and The Trashy Vegan have been the first to join the Sponsor Program, and we know that there are many members of the Fair Food Nation who have ideas about which co-ops, stores, and restaurants should be next!
