Tell Your Elected Officials to Fund Our Mental Health Infrastructure

Across Indiana, from South Bend to Evansville, no matter whether we are white, Black, or brown,  we all want safe and caring communities where everyone can thrive, no exceptions.

But too often, members of our community are left without a place to call, a person to come or a place to go in moments of crisis. Jails are treated as de-facto mental health centers and our calls for help are met with law enforcement and lethal force instead of mental health professionals who are equipped to help.

The Indiana Behavioral Health Commission recently released a report that charts a clear path to ensure everyone in Indiana can get the care they need.  The report calls for a robust mental health system, including: (1) A place to call (988) (2) Someone to come (clinician-led mobile teams) (3) And a safe place to go (crisis response centers, not the jail or the ER)

SB 1 supports these efforts, as well as the ongoing support needed in the intersection of the behavioral health and the criminal justice system. You can read the report by going to https://www.in.gov/fssa/dmha/files/INBHC-Report.pdf

The system as we know it is broken and something has to change, before one more life is lost. That's why, all across Indiana, thousands of us are joining together to call upon our legislators to fully-fund mental health crisis response.

Right now Indiana's Senate budget proposal does NOT allocate enough money to mental healthcare. Add your name now to email State Senator Ryan Mishler your State Senator and urge them to fully fund crisis response for Indiana.

Help us make a difference by contacting your legislator today!
