WITH LESS THAN A YEAR TO GO, TELL CONGRESS TO SUPPORT ARMS CONTROL

Support arms control by urging your Representative and Senators to champion nuclear risk reduction today!

Council champions Rep. Bill Foster and Sen. Ed Markey reintroduced their resolution to support nuclear arms control in these perilous times. Right now, they need their colleagues to hear from you as you urge your Representative and Senators to cosponsor this critical legislation.

This resolution supports arms control, which is the primary means by which the global nuclear arsenal has gone from 70,000 at its peak to less than 13,000 today. Those reductions didn't come from threats of annihilation; they came from decades of diplomacy led by presidents of both major parties. This is an incredible feat, but there is still more work to be done.

This resolution also:

  • condemns the Russian Federation's escalatory nuclear rhetoric and veiled threats on the potential use of nuclear weapons to further its invasion of Ukraine;

  • condemns the Russian Federation's purported suspension of New START;

  • calls for the immediate cessation of nuclear escalatory rhetoric;

  • emphasizes the continued value of arms control agreements;

  • calls for the Russian Federation to promptly return to full implementation of New START, including on-site inspections, provision of treaty-mandated notifications and data, and resumption of Bilateral Consultative Commission meetings;

  • calls on the Trump administration to continue pursuing nuclear arms control and risk reduction dialogue with the Russian Federation to maintain strategic stability, ensure the conflict in Ukraine does not escalate to nuclear use, and avoid an unrestrained nuclear arms race;

  • calls upon the United States and the Russian Federation to continue to respect the limits established by the New START agreement; and

  • calls on the Trump administration to continue to engage the People's Republic of China in further bilateral talks on nuclear risk reduction and arms control, and to pursue new multilateral arms control efforts involving the five permanent members of the UN Security Council.

No one wants a new nuclear arms race and we should all support nuclear arms control efforts like the New START agreement. Our children and grandchildren deserve to live in a world without nuclear threats.
