Today, Georgia Power customers and community advoc Today, Georgia Power customers and community advocates gathered at the Public Service Commission headquarters to spotlight how the utility and the Commission are taking advantage of everyday Georgians. The press conference marked the beginning of the second week of hearings on Georgia Power’s long-term energy strategy—known as the Integrated Resource Plan. Rev. Matthew Johnson speaks on what’s at stake this coming election, starting with the primary on June 17th. Stand with us in the fight for lower energy bills and a cleaner future. While you’re paying more every month, Georgia Po While you’re paying more every month, Georgia Power is posting record profits. A new report from Georgians for Affordable Energy and Georgia Conservation Voters reveals that Georgia Power made $92.56 of net operating income per customer — per month in 2024 — $13 more than the next most profitable utility in the U.S. and $30 more than the national average. Meanwhile, the Georgia Public Service Commission (PSC) has rubber-stamped rate hikes again and again, even as 70% of your higher bill has nothing to do with base rates. Instead, it’s tied to fuel prices and the out-of-control costs of Plant Vogtle — the most expensive power plant in human history. Brionté McCorkle, the Executive Director of Georgia Conservation Voters, summed up the developments "Voters know the score, though. They live it every month when that bill comes due. The PSC has voted to raise bills several times since 2023, and these increases had nothing to do with the base rates." The Commissioners and Governor Kemp are trying to cover their tracks with backroom deals and misleading press conferences. Kemp held a 9 AM press conference at the State Capitol today with Commissioners Bubba McDonald and Jason Shaw. During this time, Kemp bragged about $500/year tax refunds. He did not mention that the bill increases approved by the men standing on either side of him cost Georgians $503/year, before this year’s 3.5% rate increase, making one of his signature policies no more than a passthrough for further state money to go to Southern Company’s Wall Street shareholders. 📣 It’s time to fight back. ✊ Join us at the People’s Power Union and help take back control from Georgia Power and their PSC enablers.
